A six-year-old girl who was orphaned after a saudi airstrike in Yemen killed her entire immediate family has become a symbol of defiance and solidarity on social media.
Buthaina Muhammad Mansour was pulled from rubble in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a last week following the raid by Arab coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia. Eight of her relatives were among the 14 who died in the attack, her siblings among the six children killed. Buthania was trapped by debris for more than ten hours before she was rescued with a fractured skull, swollen eyes and concussion.
A photographer visited the little girl in hospital and captured the moment she tried to prize one eye open with her forefinger and thumb. The moment has since been shared on social media, with Twitter users mimicking the pose to draw attention to Buthania’s plight using the hashtags “Buthaina” or “Picture Ur eye 4 Bothinah”.
