Cholera is spreading so quickly that one child is infected nearly every 35 seconds, according to Save the Children. The infectious disease, which is spread via contaminated food and water, can prove fatal if not treated quickly, and is already killing around 30 people each day.
Some 942 cholera-related deaths have been registered, and the rate of infection has more than tripled over the past two weeks.
The numbers could easily reach 250,000 cases in six months. The healthcare, water and sanitation, and the garbage collection systems have collapsed. None of the public sector workers, like doctors, nurses, have been paid in nine months. Meanwhile the hospitals and treatment centers are full of patients lying in corridors, on floors.
The World Health Organization said medical supplies are reaching the country at a third of the rate they were before the conflict. Nearly 19 million people, two thirds of the population, rely on aid. The UN has also issued famine warnings. It’s feared the numbers of cholera fatalities will rise. Many sick families trapped by the fighting are unable to pay to get to treatment centers.
